On this day in 1985, Raven Simone was born in Atlanta, Georgia.
Landing a modeling contract before turning four years old, Raven and her family moved to New York City shortly after to help increase the chances of her being widely recognized. She appeared in commercials for Cool Whip, Ritz Crackers, among others.
Bill Cosby noticed her talent, which led to her being cast on The Cosby Show. Raven played the role of Olivia, Cosby’s granddaughter. She was an immediate hit on the sitcom, winning over the hearts of viewers across the county. The Cosby Show held the number-one spot in television ratings for four years straight.
When Raven was in her teens, she was cast as a secondary character on a new television show called Absolutely Psychic. However, executives were so impressed by her talent that they chose to rework the script – making Raven the main character.
In January of 2003, That’s so Raven debuted on the Disney Chanel. Raven played the role of a teenager with psychic abilities. She began appearing in other Disney Chanel productions as well. Most notably, she was cast as the lead character in The Cheetah Girls. The movie became the highest-ranking cable show for the week that it premiered. Over six million viewers tuned in.
The Cheetah Girls led to Raven’s appearance in several upcoming Hollywood movies of the time, such as Sister Act, State of Georgia, See Dad Run, and Hanging with Mr. Cooper.
In June of 2015, Raven was officially named a co-host on the daytime talk show The View. Discussing topics ranging from politics to pop culture, Raven’s goal was to “call the truth” at the Hot Topics table every morning.
“I definitely have a different lifestyle than a lot of people in this world—good and bad—and my views are different than one might think my views might be because I’ve never really spoken my truth until recently,” she told E! News. “Hopefully, I can shed some light on what I like to call the truth.”
On October 27, 2016, Raven announcing that she was leaving The View in order to focus on a That’s So Raven spin-off, titled Raven’s Home. Raven again played the lead, and also helped with executive producing. The show premiered on July 21, 2017.
Raven currently lives Los Angeles, California. Raven has received several offers to launch her own makeup or apparel line. “If I was to do my own clothing line, I would do it for girls who are built like me,” she said. “When I shop for myself it’s very hard to find clothes. I’m curvy and there should be more clothes out there for curvy girls.”
