Last month, it was reported by Deadline that there is talk of actor Mahershala Ali starring in the next season of HBO’s True Detective.

Yesterday, the network confirmed the news. The Oscar-winning Moonlight actor has officially signed on to play the lead.

Casey Bloys, the network’s president of programming, says that the new episodes are “terrific.” For anyone who was disappointed by the second season, this is great news.

“I’ve read five scripts for a third season… I was very impressed and excited,” Bloys said. “We have a deal with Mahershala Ali to play lead. So right now we are talking to directors and when we find a director that we want to hire, we’ll be a go for that.”

However, it doesn’t seem that HBO is rushing into finding a director for the new season or starting production.

On Wednesday, Bloys said that HBO has learned their lesson after rushing the second season, so this time, they’re taking the time the need.
