On Friday, officials in Baltimore, Maryland stated that the doubted the credibility of three police officers. They also announced the 34 criminal cases would be dropped and states that more may be dismissed, due to a controversial video that went viral. The video showed an officer to apparently be planting drugs at a crime scene.
Marilyn Mosby, the state’s attorney for Baltimore, announced that over 120 cases were being reviewed after bodycam footage from a drug case in January was released this month. The video showed Officer Pinheiro planting a bag of capsules in a yard filled with trash. Two other officers witnessed Pinheiro’s actions.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Mosby stated to reporters, “The credibility of those officers has now been directly called into question. As I have stated before, it is incumbent upon us as prosecutors to be the ministers of justice, and to do what’s right in the pursuit of justice, over convictions, while simultaneously prioritizing public safety.”
According to the Associated Press, all 34 of the dismissed case were either drug or gun related.
The officer has been suspended from the police department ever since the footage was released earlier this month. The two officers who witnessed the drug-planting have been put on “non-public contact” administrative duty.
